Finding a wife is the purpose of ‘The Office’ co-creator Stephen Merchant’s new stand up tour ‘Hello Ladies…’ — or at least it was, until he became inundated with ‘creepy love CVs’ from hopeful females.
‘I’ve moved away from that a bit now,’ he explains in this video interview with Asylum, ‘onto more of a general discussion of my failures with women.’
Somehow, you can’t imagine Merchant’s partner in crime — the ubiquitous, ever-divisive Ricky Gervais attracting the same levels of unrestrained affection, but then Stephen has always been the more easy to love of the double act who have reshaped British comedy over the past ten years.
After staying largely behind the scenes for ‘The Office’, the 6ft 7in tall Bristolian then stole the show in their 2005 follow up sitcom ‘Extras’ playing Darren Lamb, the hopeless agent who gets discarded as Gervais’ character rises to fame.
Since then he’s been in front of the camera for several films including ‘Hot Fuzz’ and ‘Run Fat Boy Run’, but is now out on tour rediscovering his roots as a stand up comedian.
Here he discusses why he took the decision to return to the stage, his latest sitcom ‘Life’s Too Short’ and whether fame really has gone to his partner’s (or indeed his own) head…
